The Problem
The conversation about artificial intelligence has collapsed into two positions. On one side: AI will save us. It will solve problems humans cannot, accelerate progress, and unlock capabilities we have never had. On the other: AI will replace us. It will take jobs, erode judgement, and eventually escape human control.
Both positions share the same fundamental error. They treat AI as an agent — something that acts on the world with its own volition. Whether the agent is benevolent or malevolent is beside the point. The framing is wrong. AI is not an agent. It is an instrument.

Third: no AI dependency. If removing the AI from a workflow would cause the workflow to collapse, the workflow has a governance failure. AI should amplify human capability, not replace it. The system must be able to function — perhaps less efficiently, but functionally — without the instrument.
Fourth: no AI worship. The tendency to treat AI output as inherently more objective, more accurate, or more trustworthy than human output is a cognitive bias, not a rational assessment. AI outputs reflect training data, prompt quality, and system design. They are not oracles.
Human-in-the-Loop Is Not Enough
“Human-in-the-loop” has become the default answer to AI governance concerns. It means a human reviews AI output before it becomes action.
